What is Foreign Body Removal?
Foreign body removal is a surgical procedure to remove an object from your pet that doesn't pass through the digestive tract by itself. Ordinary foreign objects that dogs eat and swallow include rawhides, bones, toys, sharp or large objects such as sticks and many other objects. If the foreign object doesn't pass through the digestive tract easily, it can cause an obstruction which perforates or damages the digestive tract. This is when your pet must have emergency surgery to remove the object before further damage occurs.

Foreign Body Diagnosis
If you suspect your pet has swallowed a small or large foreign object, a physical exam and X-rays will be used to substantiate the foreign body diagnosis and its location. Most pets swallowing a foreign body will need to have abdominal surgery to make sure the object doesn't cause further internal damage. There are times when X-rays do not show the object swallowed and exploratory surgery may be recommended to locate and remove the object. Immediate diagnosis and emergency surgery will give your pet the chance to recover and get back to normal activities.
Since our furry friends are curious, prevent your pet from undergoing foreign body surgery by removing chewable and small objects from your yard and home. Purchase toys that are made of material that doesn't break down into smaller pieces and are just the right size for your pet.
