Microscopic Exam
Different types of
Microscopic Exams
- Skin scrapes take place on the surface of the skin, and are screened for infections in patients that are suffering hair loss, scaling, crusting, papules, pustules, or lichenification (thick and rough skin due to repeated rubbing or irritation).
- Skin impressions are taken with tape and stained, placed under a microscope, and reviewed for disease-causing organisms like yeast, lice, fungi, and some parasites.
- Ear swab and microscopic exams are obtained by gently inserting cotton swabs into the horizontal ear canal, and the swab is rolled onto a microscopic slide. From there, we use a microscope to evaluate microorganisms that can cause yeast and bacteria in your pet's ears.
